I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Political Theory Project at Brown University. I hold a PhD in Political Economy from King’s College London and a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the Graduate Institute Geneva.

My research focuses on understanding how developing countries solve problems of collective action and political violence. I am particularly interested in public services provision, vertical and horizontal accountability, state violence, and private governance. Empirically, I have a regional focus on Latin America and leverage an array of methods and data, such as experiments and quasi-experiments, machine learning algorithms, online surveys, and administrative records. My research has been sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Getulio Vargas Foundation, the Brazilian Ministry of Education, and Google.

Currently courses PhD in Urban and Regional Studies (PPEUR/UFRN, 2020-). M.A. in Demographics (2019) at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (PPGDEM/UFRN). Bachelors in Social Sciences (2016) at UFRN and is coursing Bachelors in Statistics (2020-now) at the same university. I participated in the Scientific Committee of the III National Graduate Meeting in Demography and Related Areas (III PósDem) in 2018, linked to the XXI National Meeting of Population Studies of the Brazilian Association of Population Studies (ABEP) in Poços de Caldas / MG (2018). Researches in the areas of Educational Policies, Demography of Education, Sociology of Education, Political Science, Policy Science and Quantitative Sociology.

Cristina Rodrigues combines her extensive regional experience – particularly in the Portuguese speaking countries – with a doctorate degree in African Studies in Social Sciences from the University Institute of Lisbon in Portugal. She brings more than a decade of research and evaluation experience on United Nations, European Union, USAID, and government-funded projects in Africa. Her experience includes conducting baseline assessments, surveys, mid-term and final program evaluations, project evaluations for child labour, human trafficking, gender policy, civil society, social protection, education and environmental protection activities in Africa. She is currently a Senior Researcher with the Nordic Africa Institute in Sweden. She speaks fluent English, Portuguese, Spanish and French.

My current research project focuses on Russia’s soft power in Kyrgyzstan and it aims to explore a varied and deep-rooted Russian influence over different aspects of governance, nation building, economic development and cultural life in Kyrgyzstan. My broader research interests include Central Asian studies, democratisation, democracy and autocracy promotion, and international development.

Educator, Scholar, Advocate. A certified teacher passionate about furthering students’ access to education, Bertrand combines strong academics with extensive intercultural experience. In 2013 he graduated from the Higher Teachers Training College of Yaounde in Cameroon and earned a Secondary and High School Teacher’s Certificate. He has served as Mathematics’ teacher in Cameroon in different regions and noticed the disparities in education attainment level and their impact on regional growth. He took the opportunity to hone his skills in Impact Evaluation methods and Statistics and Economics through a Master’s program in Mathematics, Economics and Statistics while serving as a research assistant at the Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy. He, therefore, gained valuable skills in addressing issues in education and in Social Science at large. His ability to combine tools from Data Science and Economics to make data-driven decisions gives him the opportunity to participate to addressing some of the most pressing problems face by the world poor.
